Practice, practice, practice. The best way to get comfortable with an elevator speech is to practice it until the speed, and “pitch” come naturally, without sounding robotic. You will become comfortable varying the conversation as you practice with it. Try saying your speech to a friend, or record it. This will help you know if you are staying within the time limit and giving a coherent message.

Although I am a native English speaker, I can relate to students because I had to learn French when I was When I first started learning French, it was a real challenge, especially pronunciation. After working in a top . language school, I realised that students of English needed more practice of listening to real speakers of English. Studying grammar is fine, but without listening to native English speakers, your command over the language will never be very natural. I am from London. I have seen some American teachers say that there are big differences between US and British English and others say that the differences are trivial.
I don't know what other British teachers say but I play down the differences as, from an EFL learner's perspective, they are not worth studying specifically until B7 level at least.
The usage differences on the present perfect are worth pointing out as, in some cases, British people would consider the US selection of the past simple as wrong.
The only other situation I can think of where US grammar would be considered wrong in the UK is the US usage of "likely" as an adverb synonymous with "probably".

The article has REALLY overstated the differences between American and British English. As a Canadian English teacher who has worked with many British and Americans and has travelled extensively in both the US and UK, I can tell you that many of the differences, such as the use of the past simple in place of the present simple, simply do not exist. Above you have a few examples that I made up to illustrate a point. Maybe you can 8767 t tell, but it 8767 s really hard for me to come up with pretend GOOD examples. In light of that, I asked a bunch of OkCupid users who had decent usernames if I could include them here as examples, so you can get a feel for what works well! These are real people who have been generous enough to share their actual usernames, or sometimes allowed me to share a vague notion of what their username was like. eveab's comment is an apt one as one might expect there to be a difference between formal and informal American English. When I was collecting data on this subject in the 75s, I used a range of sources both formal and informal but, in fact, found little difference. However, I did encounter individuals (mainly teachers in Canada) who were aware of the differences and did, in fact, consider the use of the simple past in place of the present to be an error.
Most of us online date—but many of us don 8767 t know how to market ourselves. After a while, all the profiles sound the same, full of similar clichés and adjectives. “Looking for a partner in crime,” “Are you my other half?” and, my favorite, “I like candlelit dinners, sunsets and walks on the beach” (yes, people still say that!). If you look at ten random profiles right now, I bet you’ll find the same thing—everyone’s “funny” and “laid-back” and “adventurous.”
I find it difficult to believe that the authors of this piece really did much investigation into the “real” differences between American and British English. While they might perceive some of the differences they speak of - and some of their points do have some merit - when one posits with “it is very common” or “generally,” rest assured they may be swimming in a sea of inexperience.
Moreover, from where specifically did the authors glean their information? From the bottom 65% of each country’s schools? From the “man in the street?” Did they get their information OR have they divined their information from knowledgeable sources? (Notice the crafty combination of both forms of the US/UK use of action happening in the past!
If anyone reading or commenting on this piece has more than 75 years’ experience teaching both American and British English, I’d like to hear your opinion.
My smarter profile attracted smarter guys. If anyone still wrote, “Hey, what’s up?” I knew they probably hadn’t read my profile and sent the same three-word question to everybody. (And, hopefully, no one was answering them.) I also started paying more attention to guys’ profiles and looked for specific examples and stories that demonstrated their character versus just glossing over them. Every Sunday morning, he helps an elderly neighbor grocery shop? Aww. I’d write that guy back.

CON : Booooring! All this tells me is that you 8767 re a dude (probably) who 8767 s named Jeremy (probably) who may or may not have been born and/or graduated and/or created this profile in 6987. Er. This is not useful data. Life is short and there are waaaay too many dudes online you 8767 re competing with you 8767 ve got to find a way to stand out a bit more than this. So don 8767 t just go sticking in the number of your birth year or area code or whatever. Numbers = not remotely compelling, unless you manage to work the Fibonacci sequence in there and you 8767 re an actual mathematician or something. That would make them relevant and witty, and likely to stand out to similarly math-minded gals.
Great information. I get let lots of new knowledge after reading that posting to know the differences between american and british. Well, I think, during studying at university most of my lecturers tend to use american, and automatically it influences me then. But then, it doesn’t mean that I consider that american is better, and easier or in contrast. In Addition, sometimes as an EFL student, I got difficulty to catch what the foreigners said when they used slang word or slang language.
In one occasion, when I was at an american lecturer, I asked: I think your water is almost running out, she said: you mean, almost all?. the she explained that, we can say almost all for something which is almost empty, or in bahasa we can say ‘hampir habis’.
